Student/Faculty
CIR encourages students to take an interest in the world around them, learn about foreign policy, listen to leaders from around the world and participate in current events discussions. We provide several ways in which students can do this:
- Invite students (under 25 years of age) and full-time faculty from local high schools and universities to attend our monthly World Affairs Discussion Luncheons, as our guests, where their views and opinions are a valuable addition to the discussions.
- Bring speakers who are part of international visitor groups to schools to discuss international topics and provide counsel on international careers.
- Welcome students, as our guests, to attend the lectures that are part of the International Lecture Series and speaking events sponsored by the Special Events Committee.
- Organize an annual conference called The CIR Fall Summit. The 2009 Summit was held at Monte Del Sol Charter School and attended by 60 students and faculty from eight area high schools and colleges. Students are enthusiastic about the Summit and the carry-over studies continues throughout the school year.
- Pay student entrance fees in the Model United Nations, both Statewide and at the University of New Mexico. CIR also provides mentors.
- Organize an annual visitation to United World College, located in Montezuma, New Mexico. United World College is one of 12 campuses worldwide whose focus is conflict resolution and recruits an international student body. The College uses the International Baccalaureate curriculum.
- Collaborate with and financially supports the International Folk Art Market’s Passport Program. This unique and very special program introduces area children and students to artisans from around the world by collecting country flag stamps in a “Passport.”
- Collaborate with Partners in Education to fund teacher grants, which have an international focus. Current ongoing projects include the Ramirez-Thomas China, The E.J. Martinez Around the World and Pinon Elementary’s Silk Road projects.
- Provide internships in the CIR administrative office.
All of these opportunities are provided to designated students through the Student and Faculty Committee. Expenses are paid for by Member contributions to the Gordon Winkler Student Memorial Fund. For more information about student participation, please contact the CIR office.
