Guatemala/Belize Trip Itinerary

Feb. 1, 2010

Arrive at Guatemala City airport.  You will be picked up and brought to the luxurious Casa Santo Domingo Hotel, a former monastary.

Breakfast.  Walking tour of the colonial town of Antigua to visit the churches, of La merced, Catedral, San Francisco, Ruins of Capuchinas, Museums Of Santo Domingo, and Cultural Center La Azotea.  Overnight at Casa Santo Domingo Hotel.

Feb. 3

After breakfast, departure to the village of San Francisco de Sale. Then walk to where you can see lava flowing from the volcano.  Then return to Antigua. In the Afternoon visit villages around Antigua, San Juan del Obispo, Ciudad Vieja & San Antonio Aguas Calientes.  You may also decide to take it easy at the hotel pool instead.  Overnight at Casa Santo Domingo Hotel.

Drive to Chichicastenango, stopping at Tecpan for breakfast on the way, then continue to visit the biggest and most colorful market of the country.  Visit churches of Santo Tomas and El Calvario, Opportunity to walk to the ceremonial Hill of Pascual Abaj.  Have lunch with a local family.  Overnight at Atitlan Hotel.

Feb. 5

Breakfast.  Boat trip on Lake Atitlan to the village of San Juan La Laguna, visiting different local people such as Associacion Lema; women who weave using natural colored threadsand the artisans of San Juan, women who weave textiles with traditional colors.  Q`omaneel Asociation; is a group of midwives and health educators, who use medicinal plants as natural medicines to make Shampoo, balm bookmarks and candles.  Continue to San Antonio Palopó, village with a high percentage of indigenous Kaqchikel group.  Finally, visit village of Santiago Atitlan, whose people are mostly K’iche and whose art is expressed in primitive paintings in oil and tempera, representing beautiful landscapes of the lake.  Return to Panajachel and then back to Guatemala City.  Overnight at Westin Camino Real.

After breakfast, early departure to the ruins of Copan, just over the border in Honduras, a Unesco World Heritage Mayan archeological site.  Then in the afternoon visit the forest reserve of Macaw Mountain.  Overnight at Marina Copan Hotel.

After breakfast, departure for Puerto Barrios.  Stop on the way to visit the archeological site of Quirigua, then continue to Puerto Barrios to spend the night at the Amatique Bay Resort on the Caribbean.

Feb. 8

Travel by boat to the town of Livingston, noted for its unusual mix of Garífuna, Maya, Indian and Ladino people and culture.  Then enjoy a scenic cruise through the picturesque waterways of the Rio Dulce and visit Quirigua National Park for a walking tour of the Mayan city that once ruled the region.  Overnight at Westin Camino Real Tikal. Drive to Peten for overnight at Westin Camino Real Tikal.

Feb. 9

Today is spent visiting Tikal, one of the largest archaeological sites and urban centers of the Pre-Columbian Maya civilization. Overnight at Westin Camino Real Tikal.

Feb. 10

Move on to axha, a Mesoamerican archaeological site in the northeast of the Petén Basin region, and a former ceremonial center and city of the pre-Columbian Maya civilization.  Then further to Topoxte. As the capital of the Ko’woj Maya, it was the largest of the few Postclassic Mesoamerican sites in the area.  Then cross the border into Belize.  Overnight in luxury at the San Ignacio Resort in Belize ( 3 nights).

Today is devoted to a visit to Caracol, the name given to a large ancient Maya archaeological site.  The site was the most important political centre of Lowland Maya during the Classic Period within Belize.

Today there will be something different, a visit to the caves of Barton Creek. Glide through a remote underground water cave system in a canoes equipped with a powerful spotlights.  It is believed that the Maya once used this cave for ritual ceremonies.  While canoeing through the caves see large and colorful formations, skeletal remains and other cultural artifacts left behind by the Maya centuries ago. Overnight at San Ignacio Resort.

Depart after breakfast for Lamanai. a Mesoamerican archaeological site, once a considerably sized city of the Maya civilization, located in the north of Belize, in Orange Walk District.  Then continue to Altun Ha, another ancient Mayan city. Overnight at Belize Biltmore.

Transfer to the airport for your flight home, according to your flight time.
