.

The evening concludes with a timely talk about the outlook for the Eurozone and  the European Union by Petr Gandalovic, Ambassador from the Czech Republic to the United States. The sovereign debt crisis in Europe has threatened the existence of the European common currency (Euro) shared by seventeen countries in the Eurozone as well as the political stability of the 27-country European Union. Europe’s leaders have grappled with the decisions which are required to stabilize the Euro, address the structural deficits faced by countries on the periphery of the Eurozone, and enhance political integration within the European Union.  Unless contained within Europe, the financial crisis could spread to global economies..

.

The Czech Republic chose to join the European Union but not to adopt the Euro as its currency. CIR members and guests will enjoy a unique opportunity to gain insight form a ring-side observer, the current Czech Republic Ambassador to the United States. Ambassador Petr Gandalovic will share his outlook for the Eurozone and European Union, providing his forecast of how Europe will resolve its unfolding economic, financial and political crises.

.

Ambassador Gandalovic kindly provided a preview of his remarks for the CIR event on October 4:

.

“The European Union is experiencing the most severe crisis of its sixty year existance.  It is no exaggeration to say that the Union is at crossroads.  The steps the EU leaders manage to agree to in the near term will determine Europe´s future for a long time.

.

The sense of urgency is indeed very present during every European Council meeting.  Different governments are under pressure for different reasons and as the causes of this pressure differ, so do preferences for the potential solutions.  In this respect, the latest June European Council and Euro Area summit tried to tackle the pressing issues by agreeing on measures to boost growth and jobs, by setting out the next steps for further deepening of Economic and Monetary Union and by deciding on short term stabilisation measures.  Whether it will be enough remains to be seen.

.

Strengthening confidence in Europe’s stability is our shared priority now.  The Czech Republic is not part of the Eurozone, but Eurozone´s health is of vital importance to us as our economies are deeply interrelated.  On one side, the Czechs try to do their homework well and responsibly by keeping the level of indebtedness under control. Simultaneously, we have always argued that consolidation must be accompanied by growth created by structural reforms.  This includes recognition that we have important work to do to realize the full potential of the Single Market.

.

We all want to avoid Europe’s disintegration which would serve no one´s purpose.  Furthermore, a strong Europe is definitely in the interest of the U.S.  The Czechs want to have the transatlantic bond as strong as possible.”
