Academic World Quest 2017

Academic World Quest (AWQ) was held on March 8th, and it was a great success! We had 6 teams from 5 different high schools. The winners were: Las Cruces High School! They’ll be off to Washington DC for the national AWQ contest, held April 28-29, 2017. The Santa Fe Council on International Relations will cover all associated travel costs. Below are some pictures from a great day!

  • Please register your team (four students per team) by February 17th, 2017. Email Sandy: or call him at (505) 982-4931 x105 to reserve a spot.
  • The local contest is March 8th in the Boardroom at the Santa Fe Community College.
  • The national contest (in Washington DC) will be April 28-29th, 2017.

  • Each team must be composed of four 9th-12th grade students. Middle-school students can apply.
  • Each school may enter more than one team, but the teams will have to compete against each other at the event.
  • Each school requires a designated teacher to supervise all entered teams. A teacher can supervise multiple teams.
  • Teachers should set meeting times for teams to study prior to the competition. Some schools are creating after-school clubs to bring their team(s) together.

  • The competition consists of 10 rounds of 10 questions. Each round explores one of the 10 topics in the AWQ Study Guide. Questions are based on the articles presented within the AWQ Study Guide. Each team should devise a strategy to read and discuss these articles, potentially by assigning team members different sets of articles.
  • All questions are multiple choice except for the current events category. These questions will be fill-in-the-blank, and will focus on the latter half of 2016.
  • Students have up to 45 seconds to answer each question.
