The Santa Fe Council on International Relations is pleased to present its annual Benefit Banquet 2013.  This delightful evening begins with cocktails on La Fonda’s outdoor terrace, followed by an elegant meal and culminating with a talk by our distinguished guest speaker, Ambassador Christopher Hill.  This premier summer event celebrates CIR’s many years of hosting international visitor leaders sponsored by the U.S. Department of State as well as our many educational programs that bring greater knowledge of world affairs to the community of Santa Fe.

Our guest speaker for the CIR Benefit Banquet, Ambassador Christopher Hill, is recipient of multiple awards and honors in international affairs.  He served as ambassador to Iraq (2009-20010), Korea (2004 – 2005), Poland (2000 -2004) and Macedonia (1996 -1999).  He was named Assistant Secretary of State for East Asian and Pacific Affairs (2005- 2009) and was Special Envoy to Kosovo (1998 1999).  Ambassador Hill was a member of the team that negotiated the Bosnia peace settlement.  In 2005 he was named Head of the U.S. delegation to the six-party talks to resolve the North Korea nuclear crisis.  In China and South Korea he has become a diplomatic celebrity for his role as chief envoy for talks with the North Koreans.

Ambassador Hill’s father was a diplomat in the Foreign Service and as a youth he traveled to many countries.  After his family was expelled from Haiti they relocated to Rhode Island where he graduated from the Moses Brown School.  He holds a BA in economics from Bowdoin College and served as a Peace Corps volunteer in Cameroon from 1974 -1976.  In 1977 he joined the State Department serving in economic affairs with an early posting to the embassy in Seoul.  Ambassador Hill received a MS from the Naval War College in 1994.  In 2010 he was selected as Dean of the Josef Korbel School of International Studies at the University of Denver.
