U.S. Interests in the Middle East and Limits on Power

The U.S. has been deeply involved in the Middle East since the end of World War II.  If we define the “Middle East” expansively to include the arc of countries from Pakistan and Afghanistan in the east to Libya in the west, U.S. involvement has been especially intense and costly in the early 21st century.  This lecture series will explore U.S. interests in the region and the U.S. ability to achieve its regional interests in the context of our enduring global foreign policy interests and our capabilities, directly and through proxies, to achieve these interests.  We start from the assumption that the U.S. has significant global and regional interests with finite resources and will to achieve all we might desire.
