Many people know about the Thirteen Days, the dramatic story of how President Kennedy managed the Cuban Missile Crisis. This talk provides a secret intelligence perspective on the two years that lead up to that crisis, the world’s closest brush with nuclear Armageddon. What did the CIA know? How and when did they know it? What did the US Government do?
Bruce Held brings an expert’s eye to this story. As a CIA covert officer, he served as Chief of Station in Asia, Latin America, and Africa as well as Special Assistant to CIA Director George Tenet. During 2010-2012, he was Director of Intelligence and Counterintelligence for the Department of Energy with responsibility for assessing foreign nuclear weapons programs, including those in Iran and North Korea. During 2013-2014 he led the $12 Billion US nuclear weapons program as the Acting Administrator of the National Nuclear Security Administration. This talk on the Cuban Missile Crisis is drawn from his book, A Spy’s Guide to the Kennedy Assassination.
